Wahiba Sands stretches 180 kilometres north to south across Oman's Sharqiyah Region, a sea of amber dunes rising to 100 metres that shift direction with the shamal winds.
The desert takes its name from the Wahiba tribe, Bedouin herders who have navigated these sands for centuries using camel caravans as the only reliable transport across terrain that swallows wheeled vehicles. In 1986, a Royal Geographical Society expedition spent eight weeks mapping the region's biodiversity and found 16,000 invertebrate species, 200 plant varieties, and seasonal watercourses that carve through the dune fields during the khareef rains.
